Lord Mayor launches new 'food and footy' Maroon CityGlider

Written on the 12th of February 2013

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk was joined today by some of Brisbane’s finest local sporting stars to help launch Council’s new ‘food and footy’ bus service, the Maroon CityGlider.
Sports stars included Brisbane Roar Captain Matt Smith and Queensland Reds Hooker James Hanson.

Running from Ashgrove to Stones Corner, the new bus service will link Brisbane’s major sports and entertainment precincts, kicking off just in time for the imminent football seasons.

“Like the name suggests, the new service links our most iconic cultural and sporting locations and offers commuters with a fast and frequent service to travel to Suncorp Stadium, Caxton Street, South Bank and The Gabba,” Cr Quirk said.

“Council is committed to tackling traffic congestion and improving public transport across the city, so it makes sense to implement a special high-frequency bus service along a route that will no doubt be popular with sports fans.

Cr Quirk said the service would have distinct branding similar to that of the existing Blue CityGlider service including bus livery, shelters and bus stop signage.

The maroon livery of the buses was chosen to represent the declared Queensland colour as well as colours of local sporting teams the Brisbane Broncos and Lions, the Queensland Bulls and the State of Origin Team.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said the frequency of the Maroon CityGlider would make it attractive to passengers.

“The Blue and Maroon CityGliders will become two of the most recognisable and popular features of public transport in Brisbane,” Mr Emerson said.

The Maroon CityGlider will be a fully pre-paid service with dual-door boarding for faster entry and exit and services operating for 18 hours each day Sunday to Thursday and 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

The service will operate every 10 minutes in the peak and 15 minutes in the off-peak while also operating through the night on Friday and Saturday at 30 minute frequency after midnight.

“We anticipate the service will be a real boost for local businesses, tourists and commuters,” Cr Quirk.

The Maroon CityGlider will launch to the public on Monday February 18, with fare-free travel offered on this service until the end of February 2013. For more information, phone Council on 3403 8888 or visit
